SMDHU Update Update
Dear Tottenham Public School Families,

We have received updated information from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) regarding screening and symptoms. Please read through the attached document thoroughly for important protocols schools and administrators must adhere to.

Please visit the SMDHU website regularly for updates and additional guidance. Should you have any questions regarding their protocols please contact the SMDHU at 1-877-721-7520 ext. 5830, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or email

I have extracted a few paragraphs from the document of particular importance, especially as we enter into cold and flu season.

Screening

All individuals including students, staff and essential visitors must self-screen each day before entering the school using the Ontario COVID-19 school screening tool ( ) , or other tools as identified by the Ministry of Health or SMDHU and follow the guidance that the tool provides. An SMDHU checklist version is available for families who prefer it to the online COVID-19 school screening.

Specific guidance for staff /student/visitors experiencing symptoms:

All students, staff and essential visitors who have any symptoms listed in the COVID-19 school screening tool and/or SMDHU screening checklist, which persist for more than a few hours, and for whom the symptom(s) is new and not related to seasonal allergies or pre-existing medical conditions, must stay home from school and should be tested for COVID-19. They are also responsible to inform the school of their absence due to illness, as per established school processes.

Note: While the symptom(s) may be mild, it is difficult for health care providers to distinguish between COVID-19 and other viral illnesses for which we do not have tests.

If results are returned as negative, students, staff and essential visitors are able to return 24 hours after their symptoms resolve.

Note: Mild symptoms known to persist in young children (e.g. runny nose) may be ongoing at time of return to school if other symptoms have been resolved and there is a negative test.

On occasion, a parent/guardian or staff/visitor may feel there is another explanation for the new symptom(s) requiring medical assessment rather than a COVID-19 test. In that case, they should contact their health care provider as usual. Some COVID-19 assessment centres will also do a medical assessment in addition to COVID testing. If the health care provider makes an alternative diagnosis and determines that the condition is not COVID-19, they may indicate that the individual can return to school when free of symptoms for 24 hours.

If the alternative diagnosis is clearly non-infectious then the individual can return to school prior to symptom resolution.

For ill individuals who do not undergo testing OR receive an alternative diagnosis, given the mild and/or fairly brief duration of symptoms often seen with COVID-19, SMDHU is recommending ill individuals self-isolate for 14 days from symptom onset (even if symptoms resolve). After self-isolating for 14 days, they may return to school if they have been at least 72 hours without a fever and symptoms are improving. It is difficult for a health care provider to rule out COVID-19 without a test, if there is not a clear alternative diagnosis.

Any household members of the ill individual are to self-monitor for 14 days. These household contacts can continue to come to school, as long as they have not developed symptoms themselves and their ill household member has not been diagnosed with COVID-19.

This recommendation for household contacts to self-monitor may be changed in future by the Ministry of Health and/or SMDHU to self-isolate if warranted by increased rates of local COVID-19 transmission.

If someone answers yes to any of the other screening questions, they should follow the direction provided in the online COVID-19 school screening tool / SMDHU checklist.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and cooperation as we work through these challenging times together.

Sincerely,

Mike Pattison

Principal

Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope Fox's Marathon of Hope
<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:"arial", sans-serif;color:black;">This September, The Terry Fox Foundation is recognizing the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox was a young man who developed bone cancer in his leg and needed to have his leg amputated. Terry didn’t let this stop him. He had a dream to help fight cancer and decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Terry passed away before he could finish his run. To keep Terry’s dream alive, people around the world participate in the Terry Fox Run. This year, classes are helping to keep Terry’s dream alive by doing laps around the track or completing “What’s your 40?” challenges. If you would like to support the Terry Fox Foundation, please use the link below to access Tottenham Public School’s fundraising page. Thanks in advance for your support of this important event.<span style="font-family:"calibri", sans-serif;color:black;">

<span style="font-family:"calibri", sans-serif;color:black;">
<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:"arial", sans-serif;color:#1155cc;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:"arial", sans-serif;color:black;"> <span style="font-family:"calibri", sans-serif;color:black;">

<span style="font-family:"calibri", sans-serif;color:black;">

<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:"arial", sans-serif;color:black;">Thank you!<span style="font-family:"calibri", sans-serif;color:black;">
